What is the difference between MiniLED and Microled? Which one is the current mainstream development direction?

The invention of television has made it possible for people to see all kinds of things without leaving their homes. With the continuous advancement of technology, people have higher and higher requirements for TV screens, such as high picture quality, good appearance, long service life, etc. When buying a TV, you will inevitably feel confused when you see terms such as “LED”, “MiniLED”, “microled” and other terms that introduce the display screen on the web or in physical stores. This article will take you to understand the latest display technologies “MiniLED” and “microled”, and what are the differences between the two.

Mini LED is a “sub-millimeter light-emitting diode”, which refers to LEDs with chip sizes between 50 and 200μm. Mini LED was developed to solve the problem of insufficient granularity of traditional LED zoning light control. LED light-emitting crystals are smaller, and more crystals can be embedded in the backlight panel per unit area, so more backlight beads can be integrated on the same screen. Compared with traditional LEDs, Mini LEDs occupy a smaller volume, have a shorter light mixing distance, higher brightness and contrast, lower power consumption, and longer life.

Microled is a “micro light-emitting diode” and is a miniaturized and matrixed LED technology. It can make the LED unit smaller than 100μm and has smaller crystals than Mini LED. It is a thin film, miniaturized and arrayed LED backlight source, which can achieve individual addressing of each graphic element and drive it to emit light (self-luminescence). The light-emitting layer is made of inorganic materials, so it is not easy to have screen burn-in problems. At the same time, the screen transparency is better than traditional LED, which is more energy-saving. Microled has the characteristics of high brightness, high contrast, high definition, strong reliability, fast response time, more energy saving, and lower power consumption.

Mini LED and microLED have a lot of similarities, but compared to Mini LED, microLED has a higher cost and lower yield. It is said that Samsung’s 110-inch MicroLED TV in 2021 will cost more than $150,000. In addition, Mini LED technology is more mature, while microLED still has many technical difficulties. The functions and principles are similar, but the prices are so different. The cost-effectiveness between Mini LED and microLED is obvious. Mini LED deserves to become the mainstream direction of the current TV display technology development.

MiniLED and microLED are both trends in future display technology. MiniLED is a transitional form of microLED and is also the mainstream in today’s display technology field.
